Nishan-e-Haider is the highest military award given to personnel of the Pakistani Armed Forces, comparable to the Victoria Cross and the Medal of Honor. The award was instituted in 1956, and is awarded to those who have performed exceptional acts of valor and bravery in the face of enemy forces. It is named after Haider, a legendary warrior in Islam, who is known for his bravery and courage in battle. Since its inception, the award has been granted to 11 individuals, 10 of them posthumously. The award consists of a gold-plated star, which is worn on the left side of the chest, and is considered to be a symbol of great honor and sacrifice.
